Scope and Contents

The 1939 celebrations were cancelled due to the outbreak of the Second World War (1939-1945) on 1st September. Letters and telegrams were received from Sisters of Mercy and other well wishers, containing messages of support and greeting. Those received from Sisters came from: Abingdon, Alnwick, Bournemouth, Brentwood, Brighton, Clifford, Gravesend, Guernsey, Handsworth, Hull, Hunslet, Liverpool, London (Harewood Avenue and Grove End Road NW8), Midhurst, Nottingham, Shanklin, Sunderland, Twickenham, Wigton, Whitstable, Dundee and Edinburgh in Scotland, Baggot Street and Carysford Park in Ireland, and Grafton, Australia. The file also contains two centenary souvenir cards and two poems about the jubilee.
