Scope and Contents
The file consists of letters sent to Bermondsey community's Reverend Mother from Bishop James Danell, Bishop Peter Amigo, Archbishop Cyril Cowderoy, Bishop John Peter Jukes O.F.M.Conv. and others at Archbishop's House, arranged chronologically. Includes a proposal by Southwark Sisters of Mercy to bring together all Southwark convents under a Provincial Government, as submitted to Bishop James Danell (pencil annotation dates the item at 1876); Papal and Diocesan certificates in Latin, dated 1904, giving permission for a convent in Minster-in-Thanet, with translations written on paper embossed "St Augustine's, Ramsgate". 1907 correspondence concerns the Minster-in-Thanet convent. 1932 letter from Charles H. Collins on behalf of the Bishop regarding a proposed amalgamation of Sisters of Mercy in the Southwark Diocese, and throughout England and Wales with 1939 responses from the Reverend Mothers of Brighton, Midhurst and Gravesend. Also with the amalgamation material is a newscutting from The Universe newspaper about the 1929 amalgamation of 38 communities in Cincinnati, USA. One letter dated 1953 is a photocopy. The file also includes a small card dated 15 May 1928 in which the bishop of Southwark Peter Amigo, and William Canon Murname set out new rules for superiors in branch houses.
