The file consists of a history of St Joseph’s and St Anne’s orphanages compiled by a former pupil and presented to a Sister of Mercy. It also includes a Latin document dated 1917 issued by the Bishop of Southwark.

Founded by the Dowager Duchess of Newcastle in memory of her husband Thomas Theobald Hohler, the home was opened in 1892 "for respectable poor persons, who require careful nursing, rest and fresh air". Correspondents include solicitors, clergy, Bishop of Southwark Peter Amigo, and Bishop of Arundel and Brighton Michael Bowen. The file was put together by the Reverend Mothers of the Bermondsey Congregation.
