Biographical/Historical note
The Apostolic constitution 'Indulgentiarum doctrina' gives a definition for indulgences: "An indulgence is the remission in the eyes of God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose culpable element has already been taken away. The Christian faithful who are rightly disposed and observe the definite, prescribed conditions gain this remission through the effective assistance of the Church, which, as the minister of redemption, authoritatively distributes and applies the treasury of the expiatory works of Christ and the saints." [as given on website http://holyjoe.org/indulgences/norms.htm, accessed 02 December 2010 by K. Johnston].
The Church enables Mass to be said by a priest for particular reasons, such as an anniversary or thanksgiving or memorial, at the request of a parishioner. The Mass intention cards let others know that a Mass will be said for such a reason.
The Church's calendar contains many saint's days and the devotional card gives the names of those to whom the Bermondsey Community had a special dedication.
