Biographical/Historical note
Spiritual writing would often have been undertaken by Sisters as part of their retreat, to grow in understanding of their faith. If the Reverend Mother was leading the community's retreat, she would have made notes for her own guidance as well as for the Sisters' benefit. Another reason for Sisters to copy out works in full was in order to have reference copies available, particularly if the original text had been loaned to the community. These might then have been read out during meals or read in private study.
