Admission Registers, Bulk, 1917-1981 1871; 1917-1981, bulk: 1917 - 1981
Scope and Contents
The file consists of one large volume dated 1917-1962 records girls' admission dates and details, with an alphabetical index by surname at the front. The entry for the first entrant in 1871 has been kept inside the volume but the rest of the first register has not survived. From July 1971, the admissions sheets are unbound and the sheets for 1976 appear to be missing. There are no admissions registered for between 1962-1971.
[There is a question over whether the large volume and the sheet from 1871 are actually records of St Mary's Industrial School, Eltham/Ave Maria School Croydon/Ave Maria School, Eltham. There are two instances of girls being sent on to Ave Maria School and their records transferred there within the register which indicates it is not an Ave Maria register, or perhaps a register of some kind of subsidiary institution. Names do not appear to match those in the Ave Maria school logbooks. The sheet from 1871 is unlikely to be from the school as it was not under the care of the Sisters of Mercy until 1874 and was not named St Mary's until after that date. It also contains the admission of young boys. However, it is definitely the register of an industrial school/approved school]
