Biographical/Historical note
The Bermondsey Sisters of Mercy ran and taught in a number of schools. Many of the branch houses were opened in response to a request for teaching Sisters. The Reverend Mother of the Bermondsey Congregation was initially responsible for ensuring the maintenance and running of the schools, with Sisters as local Head Teachers to support her. As regulations changed, the Sisters adapted and ultimately withdrew from teaching due to retirement and falling numbers. One of the schools remains in the Trusteeship of the Institute of Our Lady of Mercy.
