Scope and Contents

Correspondence and legal documents regarding the compulsory purchase of land and London County Council developments affecting Bermondsey Convent of Mercy, 1952-1956. Includes the 1953 Compulsory Purchase Order and the 1954 modified Order for the Sisters of Mercy, showing a plan of the proposed new Jamaica Road cutting through the former convent and church grounds. Correspondence dated 1956 concerns the legal exchange of land as the convent and church sites were swapped post-Second World War destruction.

Correspondence 1959 and 1971-1984 concerns property sales, the insurance of Bermondsey Convent of Mercy and its branch houses, the maintenance of George Row properties and St Joseph's RC Primary School in Bermondsey, the sale of Chislehurst Convent of Mercy with an inventory of sale items and advertising particulars, and the purchase of a warehouse in Yalding Road, Bermondsey SE16. Also includes a questionnaire to the Bermondsey Congregation from M. Rosarii regarding the use of Yalding Road, dated 1979.
