Scope and Contents note
The file contains letters from important benefactors to the Mercy community. A letter dated 05 August 1840 addressed to Fr Peter Butler from Lord Shrewsbury, Alton Towers, gives a financial gift. Two letters from Edward Bellasis give a yearly £5 from the Earl of Shrewsbury in 1854. Three letters from Charles Noel, 1st Earl of Gainsborough, regarding the founding of a hospital on Great Ormond Street, London. Letters from Sir George Bowyer to Reverend Mother and Bishop Grant concerning the opening of the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth, founding a convent in Abingdon and sending a Bull conferring the Cross of the Beatitudes upon the nursing Mercy Sisters. Includes a copy of a letter from Bishop Grant in response to Sir George Bowyer's letter of 04 December 1859 (written in M. Clare Moore's hand).
