Correspondence and papers written by external Bishops to (or passed to) Reverend Mother, Bermondsey, 1841-1968
Scope and Contents
Three letters from Bishop of Cork John Murphy, 1841-1842. Copy of a letter from the Bishop of Roseau (Dominica, West Indies) dated 1849, passed to the Sisters by the Bishop of Southwark. Two letters from Bishop of Birmingham William Ullathorne, 1865 and 1883, one to the Rev. Mother at Kinsale regarding Derby, and the other containing a memorandum of an agreement between Bermondsey and Hunslet Convents of Mercy on dowries. An agreement on the responsibilities of William, Bishop of Hexham to Sisters in Wigton dated 07 April 1887 and witnessed by Canon Joseph Brown, affirming that the convent and schools buildings and maintenance costs would be paid by the Bishop [with copies found in Wigton collection]. Three letters from Bishop Charles Gordon SJ, Vicar Apostolic of Giamaica o Jamaica, dated 1890 regarding a foundation in Kingston. Two letters from Archbishop of Aberdeen Hugh MacDonald, dated 1891. Beatissime Pater, in Latin, dated 20 November 1892 and translated into English in a different hand: "Granted on the 20th Nov 1892 the privilege of reserving the B. Sacrament in the chapel of the Convent of Mercy Lambeth Road, on the following conditions for ten years..." This document may be connected to a March 1892 "Agreement between the Reverend Fenwick Skrimshire, Maiden Lane, and the Mother Superior of the Convent of Mercy, Bermondsey" to send four Sisters to the Convent in Drury Lane, London, for school and parish work [known as the Macklin Street foundation]. Cardinal Hinsley, Archbishop of Westminster, broadcast on the BBC Home Service on Sunday 10 December 1939 (annotated on the back is a recipe for brightening fingernails!). Letter from the Secretariat of State, The Vatican, thanking the Sisters of Mercy of the English autonomous Convents for a financial offering, 24 October 1968.
