Scope and Contents

The file is comprised of letters and news articles pertaining to the case of Saurin versus Star. There are fifteen handwritten letters from Bishop Robert Cornthwaite to other Bishops on behalf of the sisters in order to raise funds to pay for the case, and to the sisters to give them encouragement; three letters from Archbishop Manning to Reverend Mother[M Magdalen Kennedy RSM]; handwritten and printed letters which set up a committee for fundraising; one printed circular from the fundraising committee which includes in the text letters from Robert Bishop of Beverley and Henry Archbishop of Westminster [Bishop Cornthwaite and Archbishop Manning] to 'The Reverend Mother Superior of the Convent of Mercy in Hull' on 'the feast of Saint Joseph 1872', a circular letter which includes the names of the committee members, but postponed the collecting of subscriptions until the amount of damages was known; a letter from Lord Norfolk pledging two hundred pounds and a number of letters from Irish clergy which allowed collections in Irish convents. There is a bundle of handwritten letters accepting or declining a place on the committee; a set of handwritten accounts showing the amount of money which was raised; and a twelve page printed article of George Porter SJ's sermon which he preached after the case, asking for "common sense", dated 1869.

Fair

Paper, ink, and newsprint. Some letters are in a poor condition, the folds and edges are torn. The letters and accounts are handwritten, but the circulars are printed.
