Fragment concerning Men's welfare during Crimean War., unknown

 Item
Identifier: IOLM/BER/14/22

Scope and Contents

The file consists of a fragment of handwriting, possibly an excerpt from the annals, which details Miss Nightingale's efforts in the Crimea to save men from bad alcohol and sought to establish recreation rooms where soldiers and convalescents could spend time when off duty or allowed out. She also encouraged them to send money home. M Clare Moore RSM approached Bishop Grant who arranged the business and instructed them on procedure. As a result the War Office, under the auspices of Baron Panmure the Secretary for War, organised a scheme, where the soldiers money would be dealt with in an official manner.

Related Materials

The fragment notes that Bishops Grant's initial letter was dated 05 August 1855 although there is a letter of that date in the collection [IOLM/BER/3/3/1]the content does not concern the financial arrangements of the men. The letter referred to may well be addressed to Miss Nightingale, or indeed, the War Office.

Fair

Paper, ink. The paper is rough and a little flimsy, the edges a little curled, and the ink somewhat blurred in places. But the fragment is intact and quite readable

General

The fragment's original location is unknown but was located in a cupboard full of photocopies in 2016 when appraisal was taking place.
