Scope and Contents

One file contains letters written by Sisters who went on foundation from Bermondsey to Grafton, NSW, Australia in 1884 . One letter was written on the SS. Sorata in the South Pacific Ocean on 6th December 1884. Four letters were written from Casino, dated 1891, 1892, 1897 and 1919. One letter dated 1909 was written from Cowper. There are five undated letters, including a letter fragment. There are 42 letters in total. There is also a book of forty seven transcribed letters written between the pioneering sisters of Grafton and the Reverend Mother in Bermondsey. It was produced for one hundred and twenty fifth anniversary of the founding of Sisters of Mercy from Bermondsey to Grafton, there is a CD Rom with the transcripts of the letters which was presented to Patricia Bell RSM on the occasion when she was in Australia to represent the Institute.

A second file contains letters written by Sisters who went on foundation from Bermondsey to the Alpha School and Orphanage, Kingston, Jamaica in 1891. Letter topics include the foundation, the death of the Superior and the 1907 earthquake, and are dated to 1915. The file also includes three letters from M. Bernadette Little RSM, dated 1982, asking for information on the history of the foundation.
