Scope and Contents note

The file consists of letters and articles regarding the sisters who nursed in the Crimea. Three letters are handwritten copies between Mother Bridgeman, Sir John Hall, Inspector of Hospitals and Benjamin Hawes of the War Office concerning Mother Bridgeman's withdrawal from the Crimea dated from 4 April to 19 May 1856. The other seven are a mixture of copies and originals from the sisters to the Reverend Mother, two on the death of Elizabeth Butler RSM and Winefride Sprey RSM; one letter from M Griffin of the 63rd Regiment to a Sister of Mercy serving in the hospital in Scutari; a letter from Father John J Wheble dated November 1856 who died less than two weeks after writing, to Reverend J Butt giving advice on what to bring with him to the camp in Sevastopol and the privations suffered by 'Bagshawe' who had already arrived; a news cutting of a poem on the death of Sister Elizabeth by an unknown soldier; and a copy of the agreement made by Archbishop Thomas Grant of Southwark concerning the Sisters of Mercy going to serve in the Crimea. Also included in the file are two maps of the Crimea; a photocopy of a register of nurses the first five being Bermondsey Sisters; an unacknowledged article about the reason for the war; extracts from reminiscences of Scutari hospitals by Sarah A Terrot, published by Stephenson and Co. in 1898; a description of the painting 'The Mission of Mercy: Florence Nightingale receiving the wounded at Scutari by Jerry Barrett'; and the booklet Florence Nightingale and the nuns by WFP Stockley.

General Physical Description note

Paper, ink, printed materials, card, photocopy, newsprint. Many letters are written on fragile paper but they are in good condition, one copy, although it has responded to smoke sponge, is still dirty. The articles are all in good condition, a plastic spine has been removed.
