Clergy and bishops, 1848-1976

The file consists of letters mainly from Bishops to Reverend Mother or concerning appeals to Rome. The file includes a letter from Reverend Bishop Thomas Grant to the War Department concerning a gift from the Sultan of Turkey to sisters who nursed in the Crimea and the diplomatic niceties of using the gift for the poor; the reply to this letter, both dated December 1856; there are two letters from the Bishop of Liverpool, Doctor Goss dated 1866 and May 1888; two from Archbishop Thomas Whiteside in November 1918 regarding study periods for novices. A copy of the letter to the Bishop of Lancaster asking advice on removing the sisters from Lancaster dated 26 June 1927 and his reply accepting the notice with gratitude for the work done and regret to lose the sisters; a set of five letters from Richard Downey, Archbishop of Liverpool dated from 1932 to 1949 regarding many themes including the possible amalgamation of the Sisters of Mercy; and a letter from Archbishop William Godfrey which continued the work in January 1954. The file also includes a letter from Archbishop Derek Warlock and four other letters from Canon Clarkson of St Oswald’s, Old Swan.
