Scope and Contents

Assorted documents pertaining to guidelines and regulations:

1) Booklet entitled "An Institution for the Superioresses and Communities of Religious Women", dated 23 September 1869. 2) A page from a book on the subject "Of the Mistress of Novices". 3) Two sheets regarding the regulation of collecting statistics. 4) Handwritten list of questions for superiors with regard to community life. 5) Two copies of booklets entitled "Commentary on the Constitutions 1972" divided into five chapters: "The Aim and Spirit of the Congregation"; "The Life of Prayer"; "The Vows"; "The Apostolate"; "Living in Community". 6) Individual document entitled "Order of Precedence for General Counsellors and Other Superiors. The document was previously framed. 7) Envelope containing various notices issued from Endsleigh to Crossbeck c.1939-1972.

Biographical / Historical

The sisters' numbers in this instance, 114 and 136, were written in the front of books, this was to emphasise the vow of poverty, sisters did not own the volume, but it was for their use. Some communities wrote "for the use of" before a sister's name, for the same reason.

Appraisal

The document of the order of precedence of sisters has been removed from a frame and the frame appraised out.

Fair

Paper, ink, type ink, card, printed materials. One booklet and two documents have red rust throughout and the order of precedence is marked around the edges. Two printed books have marked covers, and two hand written documents have brown marks.
