Scope and Contents

A series of 5 items regarding rule and constitutions:

1) A5 sized volume entitled "The Rule and Constitutions of the Religious called Sisters of Mercy in Italian and English", printed in 1863, by James Duffy, 7, Wellington-Quay.

2) Small leather bound volume entitled "The Rule and Constitutions of the Religious called Sisters of Mercy translated from the Italian", printed in 1863, Kingston upon Hull.

3) Small leather bound volume "Constitutions of the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy in th Diocese of Middlesbourgh", implemented on 15 December 1934 by Bishop Thomas Shine.

4) Large leather bound volume entitled "Rule and Constitutions of the Religious Sisters of Mercy", printed in Birmingham, in 1844. Includes two copies of a "Decree of the Sacred Congregation of Bishops Regulars on Manifestation of Conscience, Holy Communion, and Extraordinary Confessors", one intended for Hull, possibly Analby Road, and the other for Whitby. Both copies of the decree are signed by Bishop Richard Lacy and dated 21 April 1891.

5) Envelope of correspondence and decrees from Alexius Henry McChrindal, Richard L. Smith, and the Bishop of Middlesbrough concerning alterations to the constitutions, the status of Hull RSM, and aftermath of the change of status (the order was under pontifical rather than diocesan authority). Also included is a a lecture given by M. Ninian Martin RSM to Sisters regarding appeals to Rome.

Biographical / Historical

in 1929 the Hull Sisters of Mercy came immediately under the jurisdiction of the Holy See, and their constitutions were approved by the Holy See. The bishop had jurisdiction in all matters concerning rule and life but he could no longer nullify an election of a superior or make an appointment.
