Arrangement

The series is arranged into two files because the copy of Catherine's letter and the string of her coif were kept separately by M. Ninian Martin RSM.

Existence and Location of Originals

The Sisters often copied important letters and documents by hand before other forms of duplication became the option of choice. This appears to be the case for the handwritten letter and list in this group as the handwriting is not that of the Foundress. The original of the letter is probably in the Congregational Archives in Baggot Street, Dublin, and a copy is printed in the book 'The Correspondence of Catherine McAuley 1818 -1841' edited by Mary Sullivan RSM, which puts the date of the letter at 31 March 1841, rather than 3 March 1841.
