Biographical / Historical
The Sisters of Mercy in Derby were approached by Monsignor Charles Payne to provide care for sick and retired priests of the diocese. Surgeons of the area also approached the Sisters expressing a desire for a private Nursing Home. A suitable place was acquired in 1948 and named St Mary's Nursing Home. The nursing home flourished with its' own theatre, by 1955 eleven sisters were on the staff. Many improvements were made in the following years, not least a new and beautiful chapel. This replaced an old chapel which was demolished making way for a new wing of 18 rooms. labour saving equipment was added and a lift. In 1980's the Sisters reviewed their apostolate with much prayer and reflection. following a new Registered Home Act 1984 governing the surgical side of Nursing Homes the sisters decided to close the operating theatre in 1986, after which the apostolate was geared towards care of the sick and elderly. The surgical suite was converted into a spacious sitting room. In the 1990's the Sisters had to recognise that due to an aging profile and lack of vocations the running of the home had to be passed to the Hospital Management Trust in 1994. Four sisters remained, Sisters Attracta, Rosarii, Winifred and Aquinas. In 2006 the management of the Home passed back to the Sisters. Two sisters reside in the home.
